Most first time single-family buyers with no kids in Massachusetts buy homes that range from 1000-2500 sq ft. Buyers who buy larger homes over 2500 sq ft usually have more than one child, or they buy the home with the expectation that they won’t upgrade to a larger home in the future. It’s good to keep in mind that some home owners in the current competitive market have a hard time upgrading due to higher home prices, low inventory and multiple offer situations, so it’s a good way of investing into the future housing market with the lower prices now. The flip side is that larger homes have higher property taxes and higher utility bills compared to smaller homes. That’s why many younger couples don’t want to buy a larger home yet (or they don’t yet have the means to afford a larger home).
